The United States has enormous hydrocarbon resources, much of which may be technically and economically recoverable with the diligent application of new and emerging technologies. For example:

• There are an estimated 300 billion barrels of oil remaining in depleted US oil fields that may be accessed with new recovery technologies
• 900 billion barrels of oil shale in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming may, in large part, be recoverable with new in-situ techniques now being field-tested or under new research
• Advanced technologies for low-cost coal conversion and recovery are being tested in the lab and field and may be implemented in just a few years on an estimated 1 trillion tons of US coal
